Luke Appling played shortstop for the Chicago White Sox from 1930 to 1950. The White Sox were the only Major League team he played for in his career.
Luke Appling had his best season in 1936 when he had a .388 batting average to become the first shortstop to lead the American League in hitting. He also won the batting title in 1943.
Luke Appling had a career batting average of .310 with 2,749 base hits. His uniform number 4 is retired by the Chicago White Sox.
Luke Appling was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964 with 84% of the vote. He died January 3, 1991.
